Mission
Statement: To promote healthy lifestyles for all in
the Boyertown Community.
Boyertown Area Community Wellness Council (BACWC)
is a non-profit organization serving the residents of the Boyertown
area school district. With obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer
threatening quality of life and morbidity, BACWC encourages you to live
healthy through teaching and modeling healthy lifestyles.
People are living longer, and
BACWC wants to promote the highest quality of life for all
age groups. The BACWC includes representatives from local
health agencies, local organizations, school nurses,
administrators, school board members and teachers, as well
as interested citizens of all ages who share our passion for
wellness.
Our focus areas: healthy
eating, physical activity and a smoke-free environment.
Healthy Eating
Sixty percent
of men and women living in the United States are overweight
or obese. They are all increasing their risk for heart
disease, cancer and Type II diabetes. Today’s hectic
lifestyles leave people little time for nutritious meal
planning, which often results in resorting to fast food. The
BACWC believes in changing the mindset and focuses on the
“do’s” of nutrition rather than the “do not’s.” Today, the
media creates conflicting messages of what is right and
wrong. This is overwhelming when beginning a new eating
plan. If you simply focus on trying to reach the daily goals
of:
three
one-ounce servings of whole grains
three
low-fat servings of dairy
five
servings of fruits and veggies a day,
you will be
developing a healthier lifestyle. BACWC provides a means to
improve your wellness by enabling you to make sound eating
decisions. The key is taking small steps toward a healthier
lifestyle, which includes balancing healthy eating with
physical activity.
Physical Activities
BACWC is
leading the way toward a community whose citizens find ways
to be more physically active. Through the Victory Mile
Committee effort, Boyertown residents can be very proud of
the construction of our eight-lane,
all weather track
completed in October 2006. BACWC also installed a Community
Use gate, located under the home stands of Memorial Stadium.
Our free
community track
is the centerpiece of our effort to
encourage exercise. Open daily from dawn to dusk, it is a
great place for all residents in our school district to
gather for walking and/or running. We support the efforts of
local businesses and non-profits who provide high-quality
instruction and programs to develop healthier habits toward
physical activity. We invite you to join us in promoting
healthy lifestyles. You can help us reach more of our
citizens with these projects as well as share new ideas you
may bring to our council.
